Students at Moulton work with industry practitioners to develop work-ready skills and knowledge. Furniture Studies students have access to excellent training facilities and outstanding learning sessions delivered by professional and enthusiastic lecturers, covering a range of furniture making skills and topics. You will learn many skills in both wood machining and hand-crafting furniture to equip you for employment or further study. A number of different wood machining units will ensure you are familiar with the equipment you are likely to encounter in a workshop. You will start with simple projects, progressing to more complex pieces of furniture as your skills increase. You will also study aspects of timber technology, technical drawing, upholstery, design processes, finishing and polishing techniques and will also receive a thorough grounding in health and safety within furniture making environments. How will I learn? Your practical work will be marked by your tutors and you will receive verbal and written feedback throughout the year to help you improve your skills. Your skill level will be assessed based on specific practical assignments. Your theoretical knowledge will be assessed using written assignments and some externally set tests. Maths and English All students who have not achieved a grade C or 4-5 in GCSE English or maths are required to complete a tailored study programme to develop those skills. All lessons embed English and maths skills, ensuring that all students that study at Moulton College are able to apply these transferable skills to any given role.
